This contract with SOMINCOR – Sociedade Mineira de Neves-Corvo, S.A. was our first contract in Portugal with a private-sector client.
The scope of the works comprised the Southward Horizontal Expansion of the existing tailings storage area of the Cerro do Lobo Mining Waste Facility (IRCL) up to the boundary of the SOMINCOR property.
The project involved the expansion of the disposal area of 187.9 ha by an additional 18.5 ha. The expansion area was regraded to shape the tailings facility, generating surplus clean material from the earthworks for the construction of embankments and cover layers, while simultaneously increasing the available disposal capacity and ensuring the minimum tailings thicknesses required to maintain the geochemical stability of the deposit. The South Expansion embankment extends for approximately 1 950 m and reaches a maximum height of 16.5 m.
The works also included the construction of five Surface Runoff Water Control Ponds during the stabilisation phase, together with the associated infrastructure required for their operation and management.
